What is Wrong With The Republican Party in Michigan?

That statement was made yesterday by a Cleveland judge as he sentenced admitted sex offender Michael Flory to the maximum of 5 years in prison, with 5 years of supervised parole afterwards, with the ability of 2 and a half more years in prison if he screws up, under the new Adam Walsh law lifetime membership as a registered sex offender, and almost 3 thousand dollars in restitution to his victim.

That statement was made after people like his victim, who despite everyone knowing who she is I will not say her name, her father, and I told the tale of how the admitted sex offender used his position within the party to blast his victim, to get his toadies and kool-aid drinking friends to say that she was a lying whore, who was only going after him for political gain. My first response to that is, how did that work out for her, does she have any more political power, anything resembling a political career anymore, the answer to both questions is no, but that probably makes his sycophants happy.

I am in the process of getting my hands on the transcripts, which go more than 60 pages and are, according to the court reporter, the longest sentencing that judge has ever done. Part of this is because the admitted sex offender made a political speech to the judge, whining about how he had brought shame upon himself and his family, how he was sorry for the pain he caused, and that he should be let go so he can play daddy to his child. He should have removed the pretense and instead of addressing the judge he just should had looked directly into the camera from Channel 19 news that was there. The other reasons for the length was the 3 speeches I eluded to earlier, and then the long oratory by the absolutely amazing ADA who completely blasted the admitted sex offender, and told the story of what really happened, the story that some people still don’t believe because of how good of a job the admitted sex offender did spinning his story after what happened happened. The last reason for the length was the verbal pasting the judge gave to the admitted sex offender before and after he sentenced him to five years in prison, and had him put in handcuffs, in front of his victim, his mother, his wife, and I.

Here is my understanding of the truth, which has been embargoed by myself until now because of the ongoing legal proceeding. July 8th was the awards dinner at the hotel; afterwards we went to the Warehouse District of Cleveland for a party by the Georgia delegation. The provided a few free drinks, but because she knew someone she got more, she got drunk, he drank, she got sick on herself, someone else, and was so out of it she dropped her phone into the toiler while puking. A friend tried to find someone to take her back to the hotel, and found the admitted sex offender and put them in a cab together. I have no doubt that he wasn’t out looking for it from her, but once he saw his opportunity he took advantage of it. He advanced on her in the cab, all the while she had just been sick on herself, and followed her up to the room and after she tried to be polite and say goodnight, he forced his way into the room and forced himself upon her. He orally, vaginally, and anally raped her. He did this to a menstruating woman, who in the middle of his rape had to be sick again, and while she was puking again, he followed her into the bathroom and raped her while she was puking. All the while he was holding her throat, pulling her hair, calling her a whore and a slut and saying he knew she wanted it and she loved it. When her roommate came back, he held her by the throat and made her tell the roommate to go away, which she did, out of fear, a fear I don’t know and I doubt almost anyone reading this will know until they stare death in the face. When he finished with her, he went to a party in the hotel, and when someone came to the door with a glass of water, which the admitted sex offender mistook for straight vodka, he said that he liked vodka because “It’s knocks the ladies out” and “I just left a girl wet who tasted like vodka, she didn’t know what hit her.”

My involvement began at 7:50 AM the next morning, when my rooms phone rang, I thought one of my roommates asked for a wake up call so I ignored it and went back to sleep, only to be awoke again a moment later saying she wanted to talk to me, she asked me to come up to her room, me, being tired and thinking I had an hour and 10 minutes left to sleep, responded with a curt, “Why” she asked me to come up and I again asked why, then she said, and I will remember these words as long as I live “I had unconsentual sex last night.” At that moment, I was awake. Someone asked me why she said that and not rape, and I am firm of the belief that she couldn’t say it, because that word brought with it so many connotations that she revered to innocuous medical language like that, as per her training as a nurse, she was used to. I went up to the room and she told me what happened, and here’s the part where I become the villain to the admitted sex offenders toadies and kool-aid drinkers. She was hesitant about reporting it, she said she didn’t want to go through what was to come, as most victims of rape, which is why so many aren’t reported, however I insisted she report it, that she was going to have to live with this either way, and how would she feel when this happened to someone else and knowing she could have stopped it, and that he did this evil thing to you and he should be put away. So yes, here is the part I want everyone to understand, it was MY suggestion that we call the cops, and it was MY insistence that got this process going. I was telling friends yesterday that I put a man in jail, and while most of the credit goes to her for going through the hell she has been through, I am partially right. I knew what had to be done, and I haven’t regretted it for a second.

We called the cops, who were a pair that would make Reno 911 proud, especially the one who didn’t take off his aviator sunglasses the whole time looking like Dangle. We went to the hospital, and then we stayed for the rest of the day, mostly because she didn’t want to burden me and the other person who came with us on missing out on things because this happened to her. I think she was in the denial phase of the grief process at that moment, as she tried to act like nothing had happened to everyone else, while inside I’m sure she was suffering. We have gone through a year together of ups and downs, of her process of integrating this into her life, and even though the biggest part of my job is over I’m sure I will always have a role to play, and it is something I am proud to do.

Now onto the headline I led with, what the judge meant when he said that is that he was shocked that the Republican Party in Michigan would believe the rapist over his victim, and would actively work to make sure his victim was marginalized. However it’s not like Saul Anuzis got on his daily e-mail and said everyone believe him over her, it was more subtle, and it was led by sycophants and others who were devoted to the admitted sex offender. It was led by people who have proven themselves to be bad people, people who would do things like release a rape victims name on his blog, and other completely disgusting acts. However these actions are just the symptoms of a larger problem, the problem of the fractioning and infighting and vitriol and sniping within the Party. Now I am all for a rigorous debate on the issues and where we want to go as a party leading into the next election, but the manner on which the party attacks its own disgusts me. I have always prided myself on my ability to be friends and foster relationships with people on all sides of this divide, but the point is coming where one of these friends is going to do something that is going to need response, and going to need repudiation, and it is my intention to speak the truth to all, friend and foe alike, because it is my personal belief that the truth is a lot more fun than anything I can make up.

I wanted this blog to be a place where I could stretch my intellectualism, and my intellectual conservatism, however we live in a time where intellectualism and serious discussion and debate is frowned upon opposed to the quick hit piece and a personal smear. So here is my promise for the future, I will never personally attack anyone, I will disagree with positions and methods, and if something is relevant I will share it, but we are all people doing what we think is right, and we need to stop hating each other for it, when we must see who the real enemies are…Democrats.

Democrats started an illegal war in Iraqnam? Democrats run around sending text messages to under aged Congressional pages? Democrats have bankrupted this country to mollify the ego of a sick son of a bitch in the White House? Democrats are the ememy?? Go Cheney yourself asshole. I'm sure that Fox Opinion Network has an anchor job for you.

First off, thank you for being my first comment, and for completely missing the point.

Let me make a mini-entry to say what needs to be said.

As a Republican Democrats are the enemy in terms of elections, that is what I meant, your reaction was a bit over the top.

The war was approved by Congress by Republicans and Democrats, including Hillary, Kerry, and Edwards. Yes a Republican did that, and about 15 years ago a Democrat had sex with a page, party affilliation had nothing to do with it.

Your disrespect for the office of President aside, we have not bankrupted the country, under the Bush tax cuts revenues are actually up, it is Bush, the GOP and Dem Congresses inability to curb spending that is driving up defecits.

Fox is a news network if you know what the difference between news and opinion is. News is what they do during the day, and between 7-8. Analysis and opinion is what is done on shows with regular hosts whose job it is is to analyze news, like O'Reilly, Hannity and Colmbes, Greta, etc. MSNBC and CNN work the same way, but they generally work that way with liberal hosts so you don't mind it and think it is fair because it agrees with you. However if Fox wants me to be part of Brit Hume's political roundtable I will take it.

Lastly your tone is troubling, there is no need for your language and vitriol in political discourse, your kind of speech is the kind of thing you see in bad movies and snuff films, if you are going to comment on this blog, do so with a real point, not talking points and cursing.

Once again thank you for your comment, seeing as it is my first one.

Scott--

Though I disagree with you politically, you did the right thing in this case, and you deserve all the plaudits in the world for it.

Now I hope the Democrats hand you your keisters in '08, but that's politics. This is beyond politics, and you made far and away the right decision, and you and the victim are to be commended for standing up for what is just.

I was with you until the end; you lost me when, after describing a brutal rape, you said the "real" enemy is the Democratic Party rather than the rapist. That's just bad taste.

Otherwise ... if not for that line, I'd be praising what you wrote, and, apparently, did. Putting what's right before your party loyalty is something more people should be able to do.

But then misidentifying "the real enemy" flies in the face of everything you wrote about respectable debate. I'm sure it was a joke ... but I don't see any room for joking when talking about a rape. Sorry if this sounds like harsh criticism; it's my gut reaction.

Scott Ryan Czasak said...

Jeff - Thank you for your comments, and we will see about 08.

Forrest - Your right it was a joke, part of my coping mechanism, and at that point I was talking about the fracturing of my party, over issues beyond this one. What he was able to do was a symptom of a larger problem, one I think my party in Michigan needs to fix so we can do what we do in terms of electoral politics. I probably should have split that part off into a seperate entry but I was on a roll and didn't want to stop.

May I suggest that out of deference to the victim, you edit the post accordingly?

You did the right thing getting your friend to report the rape, but you're way off calling the folks at CNN and CNBC liberal. They are totally conservative. And tax cuts don't raise revenue. They raise debt. And nobody in congress voted for a war. They voted to give Bush authority to use force as a last resort, becuase they were lied to about WMD.

But anyway- you did the right thing regarding the rape- although I have to wonder if your friend is ok with all these details you just published. I hope you ran the post by her first.

If you ever want to meet some real liberals, come visit Vermont. Just don't bring Bush. We're more than happy to be the only state he hasn't been to.

Best regards.

I was wondering where all these people came from, until I found someone put a link to my blog on a liberal website that was bashing the admitted sex offender for being a Republican who did this, as was pointed out earlier, party has nothing to do with this, his actions do.

Bill - The victim has absolutely no problem with anything I wrote.

Haik - Thank you for the good job but statement. CNN is liberal, take it from a conservative, you can't truly see it unless you are one, CNBC is a busniess channel, not a news channel. Tax cuts absolutely raise revenue because they stimulate economic growth, which leads to more income coming in, which leads to more revenue coming in. This recently happened as a result of the tax cuts. Congress authorized force, force has been used, and will continue to be used until grown-ups who know what they are talking about decide otherwise. She thanked me for telling her story, because too many won't listen to her. I have been to Vermont, but I have no plans to do so anytime soon, due to lack of funds. I would bring Bush with me if I could, I think people should see all 50 states.

"[G]rownups who know what they are talking about".

*sigh* We really need some of those in Washington right about now.

Thank you for your courage in standing by your friend and helping to ensure that man received justice.

I found this post through a comment you left on Great-Library.com, a blog site that seems to be run by a fan of my photography.

By the way, I can understand we all have coping methods, including laughing instead of crying. It still sounds callous in the way you say CNN sounds liberal to anyone who's a conservative ... but since you know the victim here, that's between the two of you.

On CNN, they're not relevant, let alone one end of the political spectrum or the other. But this famously "liberal media" is more something we've all heard often enough not to question, than an accurate description of mainstream media. Most seem liberal in the way they cover stories, but are very conservative in terms of which stories they choose to cover. If you want an example of truly liberal biased news, watch Keith Olbermann, just once. His mission is to give any Republican who watches his show a heart attack. CNN, when reporting on "collateral damage" in Afghanistan, never once mentioned a civilian casualty without the anchor reminding us how many Americans died on September 11th. It's both painfully obvious why they would do that - to influence public opinion in favor of the Afghan war - and a mystery - does anybody really think any of us have forgotten 9/11?

I got the link to this off a conservative site that's been following this case since day one. I thank you for pushing for prosecution and posting your experience. The end of your post does sound idiotic until I read your explanation on these comments but if you choose to keep it like that it is your choice.

Anonymous said...

Just curious as to why you think the prosecution agreed to drop so many of the initial charges, instead accepting a plea on a single charge? Was there any conflicting evidence as to the man's guilt or your friend's claim? Just seems odd to start out with something like 17 counts and end up with a plea on only 1.

Scott Ryan Czasak said...

From my understanding, he came to them with the plea, because he saw her tenacity in jury selection. Why only one count is because very rarely are people sentance to consecutive terms, he would have served them all concurrently. Therefore since he made no deal in terms of sentancing it allowed her to push for the max, which is what he got. If he would have been convicted of the original crimes he would have got between 3 and 10, so she was very happy with 5.

Besides, the plea was agreed to because instead of being Found guilty, he Admitted to being guilty, something his victim was ready to accept for the possibility of less jail time.

He stood before a judge, her, me, and God and admitted guilt, something he never did before, and hasn't done since.

I am a men's rights activist. One of my pet peeves is how the definition of "rape" has morphed into pretty much anything a feminist wants it to be, i.e. anything from staring at barely-contained boobs to brutal sexual assault. I followed a link from the comments area of this post: http://shakespearessister.blogspot.com/2007/09/sense-of-entitlement.html

Anyway, what happened here clearly is an example of actual rape, even given the fact that she was drinking. This was not a case of making out with someone, and then deciding the next day she'd had too much to drink and thinks she said no.

Thank you for doing what you did, and thank you for writing about it.

What the hell are you talking about? American citizens don't give up their basic human rights when they drink alcohol. We can all agree on that.

How can anybody say a woman has the right not to have sex if she doesn't want to "even given the fact that she was drinking"??? That's a GIVEN!

Mr. Czasak,
Thank you for writing such detailed information regarding the verdict of Michael Flory. Your friend was very brave to have come forward, telling the truth about the brutal crime committed against her. Flory would surely have continued this criminal behavior had he been released back into society regardless of his party affiliation.

I wasn't trying to be offensive there. It was more a comment on the all-too-often-used formula of, "I was drinking. How can you possibly expect me to make a responsible decision? You must have raped me."

Morning-after-regrets-as-rape make it all that much more difficult for those of us who have been brutally raped despite having engaged in no risky behaviors at all, save being warm, alive, and vulnerable.

In the case discussed here, the fact that she had been drinking bears to relevance at all to her rape. She was very clearly assaulted, and my heart aches for her while I fight the nausea the thought brings me. That's all I meant.

This guy is a true creep. I met him on a dating website in early 2006 (while he was married I'm sure). Completely narcissistic talking only about his money and his sexual prowess with multiple women specifically strippers. Good thing the meeting was during the day in a public place. Later he called incessantly trying to get me to go on vacations with him.

Mike Flory's father was found face down dead in a ditch outside of a bar. What we have here is a case of a bad gene pool.

Democrats sponsor these types of gene pools (Mike Flory grew up on public assistance).

5 years doesn't do him justice. He is truly a psychopath. I am so glad you got him off the streets. Thank You for supporting your friend.

I worked for Michael Flory while I was in undergraduate school. He should have had a sexual harassment suit filed against him many, many years ago. I am sorry that it took such a disgusting and painful incident to bring his true nature to light. After I left the office, a then-MFYR member called to ask me whether I had been fired because I had refused to sleep with Michael. (Not counting leering, his actual sexual passes at me concluded within the first few days of my employment, when I made it perfectly clear that I was uninterested.) All the ladies in his office through the years had so, so many signs and indications of his despicable personality. I feel like we let his victim down by not banding together sooner. I am grateful that you stuck by your friend.
